The price hike of 3.07 per unit is likely to apply to all consumers except lifeline consumers who consume 50 units or less of electricity per month. Despite the price hike, the lifeline consumers will be charged Rs 5.53 per unit. The electricity rate was last increased on 1 July 2023. However, the electricity tariff has continued to increase gradually over the past few months due to the increase in energy costs.

Today’s Latest Electricity Unit Price

The recent surge in electricity tariffs by Rs3.07 per unit has been officially communicated by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) through a notification. This adjustment, applicable for October, is specifically attributed to changes in fuel costs. NEPRA also said that while this decision might affect power consumers temporarily, it will ultimately benefit them in the long term. A spokesperson for NEPRA said that the decision has been taken keeping in mind the current energy crisis in the country.

K Electric Latest Per Unit Price

The increase in electricity tariffs, amounting to Rs3.07 per unit, will exclude lifeline and K-Electric consumers. Consumers will be required to make the additional payments starting next month. In the previous month, the regulatory authority had sanctioned a tariff hike of Rs1.52 per unit exclusively for K-Electric consumers. This decision aligns with the Economic Coordination Committee’s (ECC) directive from June 2023. NEPRA has formally communicated this adjustment through a notification, indicating a rise of Rs1.52 per unit in electricity charges.

These adjustments will be reflected in the electricity bills covering the period from December 2023 to November 2024. Notably, NEPRA has recently implicated K-Electric (KE) and power companies for overbilling electricity consumers. Following an inquiry committee’s investigation, NEPRA has decided to pursue legal action against both K-electric and DISCOs for their role in overcharging consumers. The increase in electricity tariff is intended to promote efficiency in energy use by encouraging the use of energy conservation techniques such as the use of LED bulbs, inverters, and solar energy systems. This is expected to reduce the overall electricity demand in the country.

Latest NEPRA News

The government believes that the decision to increase the electricity tariff will help in reducing energy wastage and encourage efficient use of electricity in the country. This will have a positive impact on the electricity sector in the long run as it will help reduce electricity production costs and make it more affordable for consumers. Power companies were cautioned about facing severe consequences if they failed to comply with NEPRA directives.

Additionally, K-electric has received a notice from NEPRA, demanding an explanation for its failure to adhere to meter-changing policies.
